I don't do a lot of fast food anymore, but tonight it was late, I was tired, I still had to drive home blah blah blah. I had ducked into one of the "Bread" places in the outside mall I'd gone too, but apparently no one wanted to take my order, so I left.

Now I was really hungry and eager to start home. I figure - something simple from BurgerKing.

As I order, I ask -- do you have hot chocolate? yes. OK, I'd like that for my drink. I pull up and the young girl has two bags. I look in the first bag - she says it's my hot chocolate. What? Why is it in a big bag? I ask - isn't it mixed? No.

It's not already mixed? No.

"Um, I'm in a CAR -- I don't want to mix a packet of hot chocolate mix into an open cup of hot water." I hand the whole bag back to her. She asks if I want something else. No not really. I want hot chocolate but I want it to be already mixed.

She says - you don't want a drink? No. You're going to be charged for it anyway...

At this point I say -- OK then, how about I just don't take the whole thing? How about that? (mind you, I haven't paid for anything yet.

At this point someone else comes over and shows her how to change the order and delete the drink.

Now I ask you: would it have been impossible to say (even with a small amount of cheerfulness) - oh, sorry, I'll mix that for you.

I come home and type in BurgerKing's URL, thinking that having non-mixed hot chocolate in a fast food place has to be one of the silliest things ever. Here's what I found:

"Communication with Burger King Corporation is not accepted via e-mail."
So much for "Have It Your Way."

Happy Anniversary Blog!

Once again I am sadly late in observing the anniversary of this blog. The first post was on February 4, 2001. How different the world was then. Since then, I've

  • changed careers (after a lengthy period of unemployment)
  • learned more about computers than I thought would be reasonable or desireable (still haven't truly become a geek although I did visit someone tonight with a portable hard drive in my pocket)
  • done some good things which I am glad to have done
  • done some really stupid things which cause some stinging even now
  • been recognized and touted as the must-interview person on the subject of fruitcake every December
  • made some good quilts
  • made some really good bread and pizza
  • laughed some good laughs
  • cried some good tears
  • taken back my life in a whole bunch of ways (and it's not the mess that some would have had me believe) and
  • lived through the world changing in a single morning in September.
But in February 2001, the possibilities offered in blogging were new and exciting. I'd found some great websites that turned out to be blogs and decided that this fit with everything I'd ever wanted to do on the web. It offers a great way to update your "content" as we used to say in the dot com biz while also providing a way for others to participate by adding comments. It allows past postings to remain accessible to viewers by doing the work behind the scenes of creating archived stuff. Blogger and other software allows for simple updates of your page design, clean and easy.

I had started my first blog in January 2001 as part of a grant I had to take photos and make quilts and to present that information and process on the web. That worked out really well

All in all, a great way to share the stuff of life - things seen along the way, fun times, cats, quotes, thoughts, etc. More of a diary than I've ever been able to keep up, although with none of the angst. Surely that's a good thing for you, gentle reader.

Happy anniversary dear blog!

Know what to expect

For the record, about 200 plus people visited my humble blog over the past two days, above and beyond normal traffic numbers. Of these 200 people, two left comments (thanks Becky and Barbara!). That is all. (apologies to the delightful Suzette.

One hundred little pieced squares on the wall,
one hundred little pieced squares...

Well, I thought I was half done with the squares, but turns out I'm half done minus 20. So only 42% done instead of 50%. Hmmmm. A little less when you figure I generally make a few extra squares. I can hear Naomi laughing already, but seriously folks - there's no way I'm gonna just keep making these little guys until I just decide to stop! But then again, it would be really interesting to see a really BIG wall full of these. But no. I know they might seem like stupid little pieced squares, but they seem to be doing a little more than their share when you look at them.

Welcome thill-seekers from QuiltArt. Scroll down if you seek photos of work in process or look around for other links. And do the right thing and leave a comment, for pete's sake (or mine)! What's the point of having comments if no one leaves them?

In other news, lots of people asking me about the webcam lately -- why are there never any cats? Do I really have cats? If you have doubts, click the new "No Cats?" link at left for the answer to this and other helpful things.
