We must Do. -- Goethe

In between all the car-buying excitement, going to work, dealing with the heat and humidity -- I've perservered with my quilt and indeed the binding is half-a-long-side away from being done. then a quick sewing down of the sleeve (and why didn't I put the bottom sleeve on it as I normally do???) and it's done! I hope to get it there today so we can take slides and official digital images and send off an entry form for it. Have to figure out how and where to sign it too.

Oh. And a title please.

So tomorrow starts the end of the process of buying the new car. I get to do the banking part of it. It's rather a daunting thing, but then, this will only be what, car number four for me. Yellow chevette, blue volkswagon, plum saturn..... all long-driven by me.

Gosh, how I remember buying the chevette. It was more money than I could ever imagine spending for something. My first car. Something made me decide to buy a manual (possibly the cheaper price tag). Only problem - I'd never driven stick in my life. This meant going to the dealer and doing all the paperwork for the transaction and then having my Dad drive me and the car home.

What followed was a period of time of me backing and forwarding up and down my parents' dead end street. Let the clutch out. Put the clutch in. Repeat. Up to the corner, now back up. Eventually, up to the corner, stop at the stop sign, turn out onto the next street and go around the block. Then hills! Quite a few driving lessons later, I was able to slip the clutch and drive without stalling no matter what.

Now I love driving a manual transmission and wouldn't drive anything else by choice. Love having 5th gear, love being able to downshift. It's gotten me out of some bad spots in my day.

But what ever convinced me to get a manual in the first place? I have no recollection at all.

After I do the banking, I will clean out my 1995 saturn for the last time.

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us. -- Helen Keller

Guess what I did last night?

The car (95 saturn with 156K miles) is sputtering, the heat is intense, I'm boiling potatoes for the pleasure of having potato salad and I have 9 yards of bias binding to iron and prepare. And the sleeve to make for the same quilt. No wonder I am procrastinating in the cool of the downstairs!

In this morning's NY Times magazine, Wm Safire takes a vacation and his stand-ins pen a wonderful piece about what's good about "good" email. Should be emailed to every person on line. Go - read - digest. Then send the link to a friend! Send it to an email list you're on! Spread the peace. Calm the flames.

I'm still enjoying the vision of the world's population lying under the stars, all toes pointing northeast.

The Perseid meteor shower will be viewable over the next few nights. I liked the description of how to look at this:
The best time to look for meteors is when Perseus is highest in the sky--between 2 a.m. and dawn. On August 12th, set your alarm for 2 o'clock in the morning. Go outside; lie down on a sleeping bag or a reclining lawn chair with your toes pointed northeast; and gaze upward. Soon you'll see shooting stars racing along the Milky Way.
If a large number of people did this, surely it would improve the world.
