NYQuilts! - New Quilt Show in New York State
1999 Show - May 22-23, 1999
Our theme for 1999's show was "Through The Garden Gate" and
quilters were encouraged to send quilts which relate to this - anything
from vegetables to flowers to bugs. Judges for all quilts, both theme and
otherwise, were Mary Klett Ryan and Anna Marie Tucker.
Invitationals included a special exhibit of quilts by Shirley P. Kelly
of Colden, NY, our second Featured Quilter at NYQuilts! This New York State
quilter is familiar to many attending national and international quilt
shows, having exhibited and won ribbons at many of them. Shirley's quilts
are especially known to those who love horse racing - her "Two Minutes
in May" is as thrilling as a real race.
Also being exhibited were: part of the new 1999 Hoffman Challenge wall
hangings; a group of quilts about child abuse - "Revealing and Healing
the Pain of Child Abuse"; a group of quilts made by students in classrooms,
as an interesting look at how quilts are being used as part of school curriculums;
and a selection of four quilts made by well known quilters Jean and Valori
Wells for their newly published book "Through the Garden Gate."
This year we also had some of the Keepsake Quilting challenge winners on
display.
Our annual block challenge this year matched our garden theme.
Classes were offered by Jane Sassaman and Sandra Sider. Lectures were
given by Linda Denner and Mary K. Ryan.
The Diamond Celebrity Fashion Show, presented by Fairfield Processing
Corporation, maker of POLY-FIL® brand polyester products was held on
Saturday. This show, which is a favorite with quilters, presents the latest
wearable art by some of the world's most talented designers.
And of course we went, we saw, we shopped at the vendors!
One of our committee members was totally ecstatic because we not only
had purple tshirts, but matching tote bags!
