NYQuilts! - New Quilt Show in New York State
1998 Show - May 30-31, 1998
Plans for the 1998 show began almost as the 1997 show was being dismantled.
The theme for this year's show was "Seeing Stars" and quilters
were encouraged to send quilts which relate to this - anything from traditional
star quilts to portraits of movie stathors. Judges for all quilts, both
theme and otherwise, were Mary Klett Ryan and Anna Marie Tucker.
Invitationals included a special exhibit of quilts by Jane Holihan of
Walworth, NY, the first Featured Quilter at NYQuilts! This New York State
quilter is familiar to many attending national and international quilt
shows, having exhibited and won ribbons at many of them. Her beautiful
appliqued scenes and designs, as well as her exquisite hand quilting are
a delight and inspiration to view.
Also being exhibited were: part of the new 1997 Hoffman Challenge wall
hangings; a self-portrait challenge from the internet "Finding Time......
Finding Ourselves"; a group of quilts made by students in classrooms,
as an interesting look at how quilts are being used as part of school curriculums;
and a selection of quilts made by well known quilters including Zena Thorpe
and Barbara Thurmond Butler - those quilts you've seen in magazines but
not in person.
Our annual block challenge this year asked quilt makers to "make
a postage stamp" to help stir interest in the AQS drive for signatures
to request a new US quilting stamp. In conjunction with this, there was
be a display of postage stamp quilts made by First Tuesday, a group in
Virginia.
Classes were offered by Jo Diggs, Nancy Schlegel and Anna Marie Tucker.
Anna Marie Tucker gave a lecture on Saturday, May 30th about border options
in quilt design. On Sunday, May 31st, Jo Diggs gave a lecture entitled
"What Are All Those Stitches?" examining the use of quilting
stitches and the designs of quilting patterns.
The Diamond Celebrity Fashion Show, presented by Fairfield Processing
Corporation, maker of POLY-FIL® brand polyester products was held on
Saturday May 30 at 5 p.m. This show, which is a favorite with quilters,
presents the latest wearable art by some of the world's most talented designers.
Of course, no quilt show would be complete without a vendors mall, where
quilters find the latest fabrics, patterns and tools. A group of shops
and businesses from across the region will be coming with their wares,
ready to provide whatever is needed for the latest projects.
